Qualisys adds IMU integration to Optical Motion Capture systems
Continued innovation and technical development means Qualisys can support more applications in diverse industries
Gothenburg, 19 November 2018 -- Qualisys, the leading provider of precision motion capture technology, today launched its first inertial measurement unit (IMU) integration technology.
By partnering with leading vendors, Qualisys can now provide effortless synchronization between motion capture data and IMU data giving customers a seamless user experience.
IMUs provide an alternative to camera-only motion capture systems. They can enhance the quality of data in the field of human biomechanics, making it easier for coaches, researchers and sports scientists to understand an athlete’s movement patterns in addition to the data collected by the optical motion capture camera systems.
IMUs provide data on linear and angular motion by using a combination of accelerometers and gyroscopes and sometimes also magnetometers. By combining data from the Qualisys optical motion capture system with data from IMU devices, it is possible to harness the strength from both systems and capture data in scenarios where line-of-sight to cameras can be an issue.
Camera and IMU data in combination is also useful in other scenarios where there is the ongoing risk of markers being hidden or falling out of sight. In Free Roaming Location based VR, where there are often individuals rapidly moving together in close confinements, the new integrated technology is a perfect fit.
The Qualisys Track Manager (QTM) software makes it straightforward for users to collect and measure IMU data in real-time or as a captured file. Whether it is captured indoors or outdoors, in-air or underwater, the user experience remains consistent.
The IMU integration provides further opportunities for product enhancements as Qualisys looks to expand its influence in the industrial and entertainment sectors.
“This is a big step forward for us,” said Fredrik Müller, Acting CEO of Qualisys. “Integrating IMUs into our motion capture systems allows us to continue to develop in new areas and industries and support more diverse applications.”
Qualisys can currently integrate with IMUs from Delsys, Cometa/Myon and Noraxon.
